In the stories leading up to Advent Children, he was wise but aloof, offering advice but shunning companionship... until he asked Nanaki to meet with him once a year for the rest of their lives so that Nanaki would not be so lonely after everyone else died of old age. How kind! Then they shared a laugh!
In Advent Children, he went all dark and mysterious, but still in a mentor role. He advised Cloud, helped Tseng and Elena, and readily got involved in the action.
In Dirge of Cerberus, he became regretful and reclusive, wanting no part of the Deepground incident despite the fact that hundreds of people had just died. He didn't want to help out, and only decided to get involved after Reeve BEGGED him to help.
So yeah, all of those are pretty cool except Dirge of Cerberus, and it's one of the reasons I hate that game. Even though I kinda like to play it.
Er, anyway. I dunno about a mean streak, but it can certainly be said that Vincent is capable of many things thanks to all that inconsistency.
